Eczema

Eczema

Atopic Eczema is a chronic skin condition that is common in children but some may often experience it later in life. Under this condition, the skin becomes red, itchy, inflamed, cracked and dry. The severity of this skin condition varies from person to person and can be managed effectively by taking proper precautions and suitable treatment.

Common symptoms of Eczema

It is important to remember that Eczema is not contagious. It is a chronic disease in which the symptoms are generally persistent for a long time. However, over a period of time, these symptoms might flare-up or become acute and demand more intense treatment. Some of the common symptoms noticed are mentioned as follows:

  • The skin may appear to be broken or cracked in some places.
  • The skin usually feels dry, itchy with a burning sensation
  • Scratching may also result in areas of thickened skin.
  • Some areas of skin become red and inflamed.
  • The skin has red to brownish-gray colored patches.
  • Areas of skin may even develop small, raised bumps and blisters.

Although the patches may occur in any part of the body, they generally tend to appear on the hands, feet, arms, behind the knees, ankles, wrist, face, neck, and upper chest. Some patients might show symptoms even around the eyes, including the eyelids. What’s worse is that during flare-ups, these symptoms might trigger multiple times lasting for weeks.

Causes of Eczema

Your skin which protects your organs, muscles, bones can run into plenty of trouble if not taken proper care. Eczema is basically a defect of the skin protein that impairs its function as a barrier causing it to react in some form or the other. Some of the common causes of eczema include:

  • Hormonal changes: Eczema often triggers in people with sudden hormonal changes or imbalances in the body.
  • Medical History: Families with a family history of Eczema, Asthma or hay fever are the real victims of this condition.
  • Sensitivity to Allergens: People with severe allergies have a weak immune system and are more prone to this skin condition.
  • Stress- related: A very common factor, stress (emotional, mental or physical) easily triggers this skin condition.
  • Weak immune system: Poor immune system decreases the resistance of the body making it more susceptible to react to allergies or other diseases.
  • Vaccinations/Steroids: Those who are vaccinated or are taking steroids are more likely to have eczema or a range of other allergies than those who are not.
